Nowadays a sporting event without any appropriate supporting programme is not really worth doing. Exactly for this reason three of South Tyrol’s currently most successful music groups have been engaged for the coming week-end. “Helli & Friends” will entertain you on Friday at the Welsberger City Sprint. On Saturday evening in the Gsieser valley, it will be the turn of the top group “Volxrock” and on Sunday afternoon the successful “Bergdiamanten” from the Gsieser valley will take over.  We have made arrangements in this way for the right atmosphere!

If you look at the roll of honour of the Gsiesertal Lauf, you will find very many international top stars, beginning with the exceptionally talented Italian Maria Canins, the Italian-Russian Eugenia Bitchougova, from Lara Payrot to this year’s Olympic participant and previous year’s winner over 30km, Magda Genuin.

Among the men many Olympic winners and world champions have won the title for the marathon distance, for example the Austro-Russian Mikhail Botwinov; the Italian Silvio Fauner, twice Olympic winner of Lillehammer; the biathlon king Ole Einar Bjorndahlen; team sprint world champion Christian “Zorro” Zorzi, or the German Olympic hopeful of the last two years, Tom Reichelt. Also the exceptional talents and winners of the diagonal race recently introduced in 2007, such as the Norwegian Anders Aukland, Marco Cattaneo from Italy or the Austrian Thomas Steuerer in the previous year. Even the Nordic skier of the century, the legendary Bjoern Daehlie from Norway had the honour to ski in the Gsiesertal where he gained the 7th place in 2003.

It is just the same this year as well. The Welsberg City Sprint, which takes place on Friday 19th February, and the free style technique Gsiesertal Lauf are regarded this year as the only European national sports event for the OPA-Europacup. After the Olympic competitions in Vancouver the “Gsieser” is the most highly remunerated event in the world. Incidentally, the diagonal race of Saturday is also still being assessed for the “Coppa Italia”. This is obviously a big incentive for the thousands of national cross-country skiers to take part in the same race together with international cross-country stars.

For many years, the Gsiesertal Lauf has also been a member of the European national cross-country series “Euroloppet” and the Italian “Gran Fondo Master Tour”. This must surely be why we have already received applications from 22 countries throughout the world at present. We are heading for a record and at this stage we are looking forward to this mega weekend.
